A short video shared on Instagram shows the eruption of Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano that began on the night of 4 September 2026.
How this check was done
Researched on 23 September 2026. We watched the 15-second clip at the address cited by another fact-checker and compared its setting with the official eruption record and the island’s status. We did not run a reverse image search, an AI detector or a frame-by-frame examination. We have not reproduced the clip, to avoid spreading it further. The image shown is NASA’s satellite view of the real eruption.
A real eruption, the wrong footage
Anak Krakatau did erupt: a continuous eruption of about 25 hours began at 23:07 local time on 4 September, and officials described lava fountains. Accurate details in a caption do not make the attached footage genuine. This clip shows a volcano erupting behind a street of houses, power lines and cars. Anak Krakatau is an uninhabited island in a nature reserve, and everyone was told to stay 3 km from the crater.
What this check does not establish
We have not established whether the clip was generated by AI or is genuine footage of another volcano. CyberPeace reports detector results and visual oddities pointing to AI; we have not reproduced them. If credible evidence showed it to be real footage from somewhere else, the verdict would become MISLEADING and we would update this page openly.
Before sharing eruption footage
Check where the volcano is and what surrounds it. Many active volcanoes stand on remote or restricted islands. Compare the footage with images released by the monitoring agency, and remember that a caption can quote accurate official figures while the video shows something else.

Indonesia’s energy ministry reported a continuous eruption from 23:07 WIB on 4 September to 00:04 WIB on 6 September 2026, about 25 hours, with the volcano at Level III (Alert). The public, tourists and climbers were told not to be active within a 3-kilometre radius. [esdm]

Tempo quoted the Geological Agency describing a phenomenon resembling a lava fountain, with incandescent rocks, ash and a bright red plume, observed from the Krakatau monitoring post at Pasauran. [tempo]

The Lampung provincial government describes Anak Krakatau as an uninhabited island of about 320 hectares within the Krakatau nature reserve managed by the provincial conservation agency (BKSDA Lampung). [lampung]

A 15-second vertical clip shows a steep, forested volcanic cone with several lava jets, filmed from a residential street with houses, overhead power lines, palm trees, parked vehicles including a pickup truck, and a person in the foreground. The caption, in Hindi, says it shows the frightening moment a volcano erupted in Indonesia; it does not name Anak Krakatau or give a date. [reel]

What the records mean for the claim.
A residential street with houses, traffic and bystanders beside the erupting cone cannot be Anak Krakatau: it is an uninhabited island in a nature reserve, and during the eruption everyone was told to stay 3 km away. [esdm] [lampung] [reel]

How the clip was linked to the eruption.
CyberPeace reports the clip was shared on Instagram with a caption citing MAGMA Indonesia details of the 4 September eruption: lava fountains, ash up to 400 metres, Level III and a 3 km exclusion zone. [cyberpeace]
Limits: The reel at the address CyberPeace cites now shows only the generic Hindi caption; we could not see the caption they quote.

Our conclusion
FAKE: the clip does not show Anak Krakatau’s September 2026 eruption. Its setting, a residential street beside the erupting cone, is incompatible with an uninhabited island inside a 3 km exclusion zone. How the clip was made is reported by others but not independently established here.
Confidence and limitations
High confidence that the clip does not show Anak Krakatau. Moderate confidence, resting on others’ tool results, that it was AI-generated rather than real footage from elsewhere.
We did not obtain the file, run a reverse search or detector, or identify the clip’s maker. We could not see the MAGMA-quoting caption CyberPeace describes. The island’s status comes from a 2017 provincial page, consistent with the 2026 exclusion order. The finding applies to this clip, not to genuine footage of the eruption.

Source and provenance
CyberPeace documented the clip on Instagram on 10 September 2026 with a caption linking it to the 4 September eruption. The reel at the address it cites now carries a generic caption about an Indonesian volcano. We have not identified the clip’s original maker.
Media analysis
We viewed the clip and describe its visible setting. No pixel-level or frame-by-frame forensic examination was performed, and the verdict does not depend on visual oddities.
Metadata and technical findings
No original file was obtained. Embedded metadata was not examined.
Reverse-image and source matching
We did not run a reverse image or video search, so we cannot rule out that the clip reuses footage of another event.
Detector and tool signals
No AI detector was run by us. Third-party results are recorded in the evidence record as context only; no detector score contributes to the verdict.
Independent evidence
The verdict rests on the official eruption record and exclusion zone, the provincial government’s description of the island as uninhabited and part of a nature reserve, and our own viewing of the clip’s setting.
