Crowds of protesters on the streets in Iran, shared as happening now: real or AI?

As shared

“🚨BREAKING: Thousands of Iranians are on the streets preparing to take back their country from the radical Islamists. Why is the Legacy Media not reporting this?”

MISLEADING

The protest is real. It happened nine months before the post said.

How sure we areVery high

Based on 2 strong and 2 supporting pieces of evidence.

What we found

The video shows a large crowd of protesters on the streets in Iran. On 30 September 2026 an account on X shared it as breaking news, saying thousands of Iranians were out to take back their country, and Donald Trump reposted the footage on Truth Social on 1 October without a caption. Lead Stories found the same video posted on Instagram and Facebook on 31 December 2025, about nine months earlier. So the protest footage is real, but it does not show events in autumn 2026. Lead Stories noted that there were real student protests in Iran this autumn, but this clip is not from them. When a video is shared as breaking news, check whether it was online before the event it is said to show.

What we couldn’t establish

Who filmed the video, and the exact place and date it was filmed. If you know more, tell us.

Bottom line

Real protest footage, but it was online by 31 December 2025, so it does not show protests this autumn.
