Authenticity · Worked scenario

What if the “AI fake” is real?

Authentic work deserves the same careful evidence as suspected fabrication.

Invented example for learning

A striking photograph is dismissed in the comments as AI because the lighting looks unusual. The photographer says they have the original file and a sequence of shots, but these have not yet been examined.

What is actually known?

There is an accusation and an offer of supporting material. Neither the comments nor the photographer's assertion alone settles the origin. An unusual-looking image can have several explanations.

How to investigate it

  1. State the exact AI allegation and the feature being cited as evidence.
  2. Request the original file and surrounding sequence with appropriate permission.
  3. Check whether the sequence, metadata, location and publication history tell a consistent story.
  4. Look for independent records of the subject or event where relevant.
  5. Explain any ordinary photographic or editing effects only when the available evidence actually supports that explanation.

Where the evidence stops

A documented capture history and corroborating evidence can support authenticity. The absence of an obvious AI clue cannot prove an image is real. If origin remains unverified, say so; do not force either label.

This is an illustrative scenario, not a report about a real incident or a published verdict. No media, source record or detector result has been invented as evidence.
